Kim Comes to Read

Kim Eichstadt (Ryker's mom) works at Wells Fargo and she volunteered to share their Reading First program with our classroom! Her first visit was on Wednesday, March 5th.
She read us a book called The Sandwich Swap.

Math Group Work: Counting by Using Groups of Ten

On Wednesday we worked on finding easier ways to count a large group of objects. We brainstormed ideas and decided it would be easiest to try counting by tens. In these pictures the students are working together to group the objects by ten and then use the Secret Code Cards to show how many items they have using tens and ones.

I told Ryker if he could tell me what that number was I would give him that many dollars. Luckily, he guessed a zillion... Otherwise I would have been out a million dollars to a first grader!

Miss Katelynn

On Monday, Katelynn Ellsworth (senior at HHS) joined our classroom for the day. She is currently enrolled in an Education class through USD. She helped us with writing our stories about what would happen if The Cat In the Hat came to our classroom while Miss Thorson was away.

New Math Groups!

Now that our class has Daily 5 under control, we started working on math groups!
The plan is to do Daily 5 four days a week and do Math Groups every Thursday afternoon.

Playing Number Grabber

Our class practiced our teen totals with partners by playing Number Grabber on the smart board. In this game, while the rest of the class closes their eyes, one student erases one number and says, "Open your eyes for a big surprise."  The class then opens their eyes and raises their hand to tell which partner or total has been erased. We did this earlier in the year with totals less than ten. Now we are practicing with teen totals.

Valentine's Day Party

We had a fantastic time celebrating Valentine's Day in our classroom! The kids got to practice Olympic Ski Jumping and the Ski Slalom on the Wii Fit Board. They got to do Candy Heart Math with graphs, tallies, and sorting. We played Valentines BINGO and made a tasty snack together.
The class LOVED having our Parent Helpers stop in for the afternoon!
